Can a previous employer give out the number of sick days taken?

I was employed by one company for a number of years. The last year I was there, the company was experiencing financial difficulties, layover were happening everywhere. The worst part of it, was the way the managers were treating employees, especially if they were on a potential layoff list. I admit, that in the last six months I was there I did take a lot of sick days, Is this something an employer can give out on a background check.
