Effect of layoffs and budget cuts on future teachers (chemistry in particular)?

I have been considering going into teaching after receiving my BS in chemistry(as well as a second major in biology). I was under the impression that there was a large demand for teachers of Chemistry, Physics, and Math, and that I would be able to find a full time job once receiving licensure. But now all I here about are teacher layoffs. Are Chemistry teachers being layed off? Is the demand gone? My thought is that most layoffs are in the saturated areas, like English, History, PE, Art etc. Is this just wishful thinking? Thanks!
