Thinking about suing my former employer?

I had insurance through a former employer after a layoff which I made timely payments on up until August 2009. I had a baby in June 2009 and was in the hospital for a week. All of the claims started coming back as unpaid and kept getting mixed up answers from the insurance company. After a year, I found out that my employer canceled my insurance effective June 2009 and never notified me, yet kept taking my premiums well past the date of cancellation. I spent the next year writing them letters, attempting to speak to benefits and accounting, and never got anywhere. I have been working with the DOL for the last month to try to resolve this issue, but the employer is not responding to them either. It will be two years on June 1 of this year since they canceled my insurance without notifying me. Since I am not finding a resolution and most of the $20,000 in medical bills that I owe has gone into collection because I am a single mother and cannot afford to pay the outrageous payments they are asking, I would like to sue my former employer for the medical bills and then lawyers costs. I am trying to find information on a statute of limitations and one of the lawyers I have spoken to did not even know what it might be and was of no help. Does anyone know where I could find this information? I really appreciate it.
