Why did my company tell me I had an unemployment claim when I was laid off?

At my layoff meeting in March my company assured me that I would have an unemployment claim right away so that i could pay my bills until I could find another job(6 months). I then went to the state of PA and was told that I do not have a claim until July so I now have no money coming in for April,May,June. I feel like my company lied to me just to get me out of the building. What should I do?
