Are there alternatives for testifying in court other than appearance for a subpeona?

My husband witnessed an accident in MS 2 yrs ago. Now we live in TN and have absolutely no financial means to get there to testify. He wants to do the right thing but between layoffs we are barely able to afford rent and groceries much less days off and a 2 day trip hundreds of miles away. Plus we no longer have a vehicle to make it there. He is to polite to argue with the lawyers and I'm technically not involved but I can't stand by and lose my house, car, and ability to buy food when he did nothing but try to help someone.
