Do you agree with a thought that everything happens for a reason?

I agree with the statement insofar as there is a cause for every effect. However, I don't believe that there is a greater purpose for every significant occurrence in our lives. It is naivete and insecurity that has us ascribe some path, or hidden meaning, otherwise every single moment would have to happen for a reason, in order to reach this momentous single point, removing the possibility of free will. I for one believe that we are free to do with our lives what we please, but since every one else is also free, they can often impact our lives in both negative and positive ways.
